The National Broadband Network (nbn™) is well and truly, providing businesses with access to faster and more reliable internet connections. As fast, reliable internet continues to be vital for business operations, it’s critical that organisations are prepared. Here’s everything you need to know to avoid interruption to your business when switching to the nbn™.

Keep informed

The nbn planning has seen several changes since a fast broadband initiative was announced in the lead up to the 2007 federal election. From the date your NBN connection is ready, you’ll have 18 months to make the switch before existing services are turned off. Although this might seem like plenty of time, it can take 10 to 12 weeks to install an nbn connection. You should be notified by your current ISP provider, however, to stay ahead of the game you can register your intent with Techwell and the team will ensure you don’t miss a beat.

Contact your service provider

Prepare early – Get in touch with your service provider. By registering your interest with Techwell, you’ll ensure your process is smooth from the get-go. The team can help evaluate your business needs and the best plans for you.

Contact your landlord

To streamline the installation process, you can either: register your building with nbn Co (you’ll need to own the premises where your business takes place), or get your landlord’s consent for equipment to be installed inside and/or outside of the premises.

If you run into trouble getting your landlord on board, explain to them:

  • Your existing services will soon be disconnected and to remain connected, you will need to switch over to the nbn before the disconnection date.
  • The government generally pays for the installation of NBN equipment.

Consider your equipment

Transitioning a business network to the nbn can be complicated at a technical level, and can also involve multiple telecommunications service providers.

Consider your business devices, such as current fax machines, security alarms, medical alarms, lift phones, or EFTPOS machines that might not work on the nbn.

There’s optional backup provided by nbn Co with no charge to consumers obtaining a fibre to the premises connection. The backup battery aims to allow calls to be made during power outages. You’ll need to check with your telecommunications provider if their nbn voice service will be compatible.

FAQ’s

Q. Can I keep my existing phone number?

A. In most cases, you can keep your existing phone number.

Q. Will my current telecommunications equipment work over the nbn?

A. You will need to confirm if current telecommunications equipment will work over the nbn with your provider

Q. Will I require additional lines to be installed to make the transition to nbn?

A. You may not require any additional cabling if you are ‘wireless’ and use cordless phones and Wi-Fi to connect devices, such as; computers, fax, EFTPOS and ATM terminals, smartphones and tablets.

Don’t hesitate!

Don’t leave it until the last minute! Sooner or later you will need to switch your services over to the nbn. Remember existing services will be disconnected 18 months after connections go live and moving to the nbn is not automatic.
